Body Imaging encompasses CT and MRI examinations of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis. Pediatric Body CT, Musculoskeletal CT, ENT and Neuroradiologic CT and MRI are read by other divisions. These physicians have expertise in interpretation of CT scans, ultrasound and plain films of the thorax, abdomen and pelvis, as well as in performance of GI fluoroscopy. They are also involved in CT and ultrasound guided procedures, including biopsies and abscess drainage. All all study interpretation takes place using state-of-the-art digital workstations as part of PACS.
GI/GU Radiology includes performance of contrast examinations of the GI tract, oral cholecystograms and t-tube cholangiograms, excretory urograms, ante- and retrograde pyelograms, urethrograms and cystograms. Special examinations are rehabilitation pharyngograms in cooperation with the Division of Communicative Disorders and retrograde cholangiopancreatograms (ERCP) in collaboration with the Division of Gastroenterology.
The majority of adult ultrasound examinations are abdominal. The major examinations by frequency include (1) abdominal survey, (2) renal ultrasound (including renal transplants), (3) pelvic ultrasound, (4) testicular and thyroid ultrasound, and (5) color flow ultrasound of extremities. All other examinations may also include Doppler studies for blood flow. Special sonographic studies such as endorectal prostatic ultrasound, intraoperative ultrasound and percutaneous US guided biopsies and abscess aspirations are routinely performed during the rotation. Obstetric ultrasound is not routinely performed by the Department of Radiology.
Residents receive experience in OB ultrasound at Shands at UF and Shands at Lake Shore hospitals. Although OB ultrasound at Shands at UF is not the operational responsibility of the Department of Radiology, all radiology residents schedule a 4-week rotation in the ultrasound section of the Department of OB/GYN for their OB ultrasound clinical experience.
