Welcome to the Department of Radiology
The Department of Radiology is one of 20 clinical divisions of the University of Florida College of Medicine in Gainesville, FL. Over 30 faculty members and hundreds of support personnel provide diagnostic and interventional radiology services to Shands at UF and the Gainesville Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The department also offers outpatient services at the Park Avenue Imaging Center and Shands Medical Plaza, site of many College of Medicine outpatient clinics.
The University of Florida Department of Radiology is very involved in the development of image networking, teleradiology, electronic communication and Picture Archival and Communications Systems (PACS). All images are acquired digitally, and can be transmitted to the appropriate faculty and resident subspecialty workstations. Digital images are sent to Intensive Care Units and the Emergency Department. Images are also available to referring physicians, radiologists, residents, and other health care professionals through a secure web-based internet application. The PACS system allows images from all hospitals in the Shands network to be accessed by University of Florida and Community radiologists, increasing learning opportunities for the residents as well as supporting expert specialty consultation throughout the system.
Radiology has recently initiated agressive programs in CT and MRI Cardiology, a Vascular Interventional Program and Clinic, and Breast imaging with Computer Assisted Diagnosis (CAD) capability. These programs are supported by state-of-the-art imaging and image processing equipment.
